The War of 1812

28th January 2005 Canada,Patriotism Canada,User Feedback -
Grail, an American, emailed me about his disagreement with the content of my website in regards to the War of 1812. What follows is my response: Feedback: This info is wrong, Canada did not exist at this time, your thinking of the British Empire. This was in reference to the following paragraph: In the war of 1812, we pushed the Americans so far back... passed their 'White House', burned it...and most of Washington. You are correct--but still wrong. What was to become Canada was part of the British Empire. Therefore 'we' did. 'We' were the British Empire. This is where Canada ...

Are you chicken?

22nd January 2005 Canada -
Over the past few years I have grown increasing concerned with the meat that I eat. From the United States there has been an influx of reports about how bad meat can be for you: hormones, steroids, diseases, unhealthy raising conditions. Not to mention animal rights groups clamouring to stop the factory farming of animals, giving then inhumane living conditions. Every know and then I learn something that makes me really love living in my country. Sometimes I just have to salute the flag. What did I learn this week? I leaned that if the old adage “you are what you eat” is ...

There is a new threat to computers everywhere. One which is widely unknown, but quickly coming in to the spotlight. Spyware are programs which get on your computer and 'spy' on you in one way or another. They get on your computer in one of several ways. Sometimes they come 'packaged' with other software—such as Kazaa. Sometimes they are programs that you install yourself, to monitor your websites passwords, for example. Other times they sneak on to your system, which is really easy if you use Internet Explorer! Once there they can track what websites you go to, or simply ...

Installing SpyBot S&D

15th January 2005 Computers -
The main reason computer slow down over time is because they have so-called 'spyware' on their computer. These programs may be simple ones that pop up ads on your computer, or watch what websites you go to, so that other companies can target web-ads, pop-up ads, and spam for your computer. A fan-favourite these days is SpyBot S&D, a nice, free anti-spyware program. Before you install it, however, you may want to uninstall any anti-spyware programs you current have, if any. Once you have removed your current anti-spyware program, you can download and install SpyBot S&D: Go to ...

Computer viruses has been a large problem in the field of computers for years. Viruses can be malicious, but even those viruses that don't anything bad will slow down your computer more and more as time goes on. Some viruses also try to attack other Internet users, or companies, using your Internet connection. And their infectious nature makes it hard to find all them when you try. Using AVG Free Edition

9th January 2005 Computers -
Every computer should be scanned for viruses every 1 week at the most, and every 1 month at the very least. Installing anti-virus software is not enough: It is always critically important to update your virus software so that it knows the latest viruses and is able to clean them off your system. Once you begin scanning you may leave your computer all together. A complete scan can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour depending on you system speed, and how much data you have on your hard drive. Also, if you have many viruses and spyware you have on your system, this will also slow down ...

Installing AVG Free Edition

9th January 2005 Computers -
Keeping viruses off your computer is very important. Viruses slow down the speed of your computer, can use your Internet connection, and makes you a risk to other users. There are many choices in anti-virus software. How much you are willing to pay, how the programs work, and what operating system you are using are some of the main factors in choosing an anti-virus program. My choice anti-virus program is AVG Free Edition. That's right—it's free. And it passes the Virus Bulletin's 100% test. The first thing you should do, however, before installing a virus scanner, is to ...

The Biggest Computer Problems

7th January 2005 Computers -
This past summer, while I was looking for a job, I did some freelance computer repair work around town. The money was quite descent, and the hours short. That is, of course, if you can get advertised. Luckily when my advertising had been depeleted I picked up a job. But that's another story. My father assured me that I could find no end to work if I tried to speed up people's home computers. Viruses and spyware, he told me, were the main culprits. By spening under two hours cleaning up these problems on a single machine I could bucket loads of money--or, at least, wallet ...

Using SpyBot S&D

6th January 2005 Computers -
Spyware is a major problem on computers that are connected to the Internet. If you want to make sure that your system is safe from spyware, I would suggest that you run anti-spyware software, like SpyBot S&D, every week at the most, or every month at the very least. Happily, you can have SpyBot run in the background while you do other work, or while leave your computer all together. Below are the instructions on how to run SpyBot S&D on a weekly basis. Remember: Updating your anti-spyware program, just like updating your anti-virus program, is critical. Click "Search for updates". ...

SpyBot S&D: System Restore turn off

4th January 2005 Computers -
When you use SpyBot S&D to eliminate unwanted spyware on your system, sometimes things can go wrong. To prevent this SpyBot S&D allows you to use System Restore, if you have Windows XP. System Restore makes back up data, incase something goes horribly wrong, and Windows can automatically recover to the last 'save point'. However, on many computers I have had the trouble where saving the restore point causes lots of trouble. In one case, the saving process lasted a few hours before we had to manually reboot the computer. There are two ways to turn off this feature. If you need to turn ...
